Tham Piu Cave is located in Xieng Khouang province, Laos. The cave took its name from a village called Tham Piu, which means “the cave” in Lao. It was called this due to the large mountain over the cave.
During the Second Indochina War in 1968, people took refuge in a cave called Tham Piu. However, a rocket fired from a Royalist aircraft ignited some cluster bombs that were stored inside. Thus, hundreds of people lost their lives, along with numerous livestock and personal items. Given its tragic history, it is bittersweet that Tham Piu has such beautiful space.
