Mr. Eric will be your guide to take you on a full day tour of the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang province, visiting all of the most interesting sites 1,3,4. He is a very clever and capable young Lao man who has refined his English speaking skills communicating with Westerners. He is also very knowledgeable, able to answer questions about the history and culture of Laos that are specific to the Plain of Jars area as well as more general questions about Laos and its rich culture.

My wife Stephanie and I had been planning our trip to Laos for well over a year. We wanted to go somewhere that would give us an opportunity to immerse ourselves in the culture away from the more touristy areas of Southeast Asia. Phonsavan seemed like it could be a great fit, with fewer tourists than Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng, but still close enough that if we needed any Western comforts, we could easily travel there for the day.

I stayed at this hotel during September, 2019. It is quiet, the staff are friendly and helpful, and they can pick you up from the bus station when you arrive. The restaurant is good too, and you can eat breakfast there for 15 000 kip, although the price gets higher later in the morning.

I have to say it was a great pleasure to stay at the Hillside Residence. But before I give you the feedback, let me tell you about my experience with this hotel in phonsavan. I’ve been traveling around the world for many years now, and I’ve stayed in many hotels that are varied in price from affordable to overpriced. Often times, I’m looking for a good room at a bargain price as it’s just me on vacation and no crew so I don’t need a lot of space or anything fancy. It’s always best to book ahead but sometimes booking in person is an option too.
